Go ahead and close your eyes (but not really, keep reading), we’re going back to the summer of 2006. Buttons by the Pussycat Dolls is blaring on the stereo of a gold 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser. You and your college roommates sip soda from giant 32oz styrofoam cups from the Discount Den convenience store. You’re laughing about the night before (Did she really feed mac and cheese to the cat??) and rallying for another night. It’s summer, you’re 21, and for the first year you didn’t go home for the summer opting instead of live in your rented house with your roommates and work for the university. This might be the best summer of your life and you don’t even realize it yet.
Food is irrelevant at this point in your life. Mostly just fuel. Deli meat sandwiches and late night breadsticks and Taco Bell in between the occasional salad is good enough. Drinks however– that’s a different story. You are VERY invested in drinks. Looking back, I think everyone goes through a few phases in college when it comes to drinking:
- Phase 1: Learn to Drink- This is when as an 18 year old freshman you are handed cold Keystone Lights out of a trashcan filled with ice and you shrug at your friends, and crack it open. It kinda sucks but you keep powering through and before you know it– you like (light) beer! It’s like magic. When you’ve conquered the extra light dry draft ice beers, you might venture into flavored alcohol or sweet spiced rum. Captain and Coke, Jim Beam & Dr. Pepper (A REAL COMBINATION THAT I LIKED ONCE UPON A TIME), maybe even a Mike’s Hard Lemonade. Sugar rules.
- Phase 2: Learn to Drink at a Bar- Once you are well versed in the alcohol+soda combination you favor most, you turn 21 and are thrust into a world of opening tabs (the horror!), specific bar’s speciality drinks (Baltimore Zoo anyone?), and the artistry of coming back the next day for your debit card like it’s nbd. This phase is learned quickly, because you spend literally every weekend at a bar.
- Phase 3: Care about Taste- This phase hits around the time you are a senior and perhaps the idea of enjoying a cocktail, beer, or even a glass of wine with a meal slightly outweighs how many shots you can take that night. This was the part during our senior year where we would go out for a fancy drink before hitting up the bars. Like pre-drinking a chocolate martini and then following it up with pitchers of Bud Select was the classiest thing on earth. We drank a lot of weird martinis that year. A lot.
Anyway so somewhere between Phase 2 and 3, came this summer-in-a-cup drink that we would order all the time at our favorite bar: The Blueberi Stoli & Pink Lemonade. Having enjoyed this as an adult in the not so recent past, I think I like whatever 21 year old me was up to at the bar that summer. As a disclaimer: I am not a fan of blueberry flavored things, in fact blueberries are my least favorite berry! Just the idea of blueberry vodka alone makes me want to gag, but something about the way it mixes with the pink lemonade makes it a really delicious, easy, 2-ingredient cocktail that is worth sipping in a driveway on a hot summer day.
