Friends, it’s the best kind of Friday. The Friday before a week long beach vacation. You know, the one that you spend running around town buying travel size shampoos, snacks for the car and dropping the dog off for boarding. The kind that you don’t even mind being so busy (but seriously, what am I forgetting?) because you know what lies ahead, and the end of the day capped off with a ice cold beverage is more of a celebration and a “let’s go!” than a “what a freaking week” kind of a drink. This week– the Driveway Drink of choice is one made for day drinking (a skill I’ve been working on this summer): A Citrus IPA Shady.
I know, I know. They SELL Shandy. Leinenkugel fully jumped the shark and has a whole variety pack ranging from Ginger Shady to :::shudder::: “Harvest Patch” which I guess has pumpkin in it? Anyway as much as I like sipping on a lemonade beer, they are awfully sweet and in general I tend to lean towards the more bitter side of drinks. Aperol Spritz, Negroni etc. I won’t lie, I like a wheat beer as much as the next white suburban mom (not too many beers I won’t happily drink) but I was looking for something a little less sweet for this Friday afternoon.
I recently had two citrusy IPAs (which makes total sense as usually the hops used in IPAs and Pale Ale’s have a nice citrusy quality to them) and sort of wondered why blue moon has all the fun with the orange slice tossed in. That combined with the idea of stretching out a few beers into a larger quantity for day drinking success without getting socked with a craft beer headache sounded like just the thing when the heat index is in the 90s.
I took a quality local IPA (but nothing too fancy, just like you don’t want to blow really good wine on sangria, the same approach is taken here), the juice of 4 citrus fruits, and some club soda to make the easiest, pitcher friendly, neighbor friendly beverage for your Friday. It’s painfully easy, refreshing, and you can have a LOT of them without dismissing yourself from the driveway for bed at 6pm.
Citrus IPA Shandy
Makes 2 qts
3 12oz bottles of your favorite mid-range IPA or Pale Ale, chilled
6 oz club soda
Cut each fruit in half. Slice one half of the fruit into 1/4 inch slices (for the pitcher). Take the other half of each fruit and squeeze juice into a measuring cup, you should end up with just under 1 Cup, but this is a loose measurement. Little more or little less is fine.
In a pitcher, place the remaining citrus slices, carefully pour in the beer and top with club soda and fruit juice. Serve immediately over ice. Cheers!
