It’s the first day of fall. It’s also 90 degrees. Screw the driveway, I’m going inside to sip this cocktail in front of a fan.
The title of this drink, “Indian Summer Cider Sangria” was made because there is ALWAYS an Indian Summer. Usually I love it. It gets warm, you get one last push of warmth, and then you are READY FOR SWEATER SEASON! This year is really taking it to the extreme. The heat has climbed into the 90s and instead of pulling the sweaters out from storage, we are all turning down our A/C to celebrate the first day of fall. My wardrobe has no idea what’s going on as I am constantly flipping between “transitional” fall clothes and then busting out summer tops and dresses once more. Last night– we had family pictures taken in which we donned our sweaters and flannel, and sat on a blanket…..in the sweltering heat. When my Christmas card arrives and you see us looking so seasonal, just know that we were actually battling some serious temperatures through those smiles.
To add to that, this weekend Chris and I have decided to try a one night, fairly easy backpacking trip. When we first blocked out this weekend, I had visions of a crisp September morning curled up in my sleeping bag in the tiny two person tent. Maybe enjoying a hot coffee watching the misty lake as the sun rises. Now it’s looking like I might just leave the sleeping bag in my pack, sleep without the rain fly on the tent, and hope that I don’t sweat to death before morning. I’ve packed wine. Wish us luck!
Heat complaints aside, this drink is actually super refreshing. It’s apple from top to bottom, no messing around with any other sort of fruit (unless you count the grapes in the wine that is). It’s also dangerously drinkable. I sort of accidentally ended up splitting the PITCHER with my neighbor which resulted in unexpected naptime at about 4pm. Because of this, I would recommend inviting at least one or two other people to share in the apple goodness.
The drink comes together really easy, as most sangrias do. A whole bottle of wine, some Apple Cider (you know you picked up a jug at the orchard!), some apple slices (the best part of sangria fruit imo), and some Calvados for an extra kick of apple. A few glugs of club soda for a little fizz and you are in Sangria business!
This is a perfect pitcher for an afternoon with friends (in or outside), and is definitely one that will be added to my why-isn’t-it-fall-yet Cocktail go-tos. Happy Friday friends!
Indian Summer Cider Sangria
Makes 1 Pitcher
One bottle of Sauvingnon Blanc
1.5 C unfiltered apple cider
1/2 C Calvados Apple Brandy
4 oz Club Soda
1-2 apples (of your choice), cut into 1 inch chunks for the pitcher
Combine all ingredients in pitcher, stir well, serve over ice on a day that’s too hot and all you want to do is just wear boots and a poncho, but you can’t because the heat index is 95. And you’re crying.
This will help.
