THE OLYMPICS HAVE ARRIVED!
Is there a better way to perk up a dreary February than with 17 days of intense winter weather couch-coaching? Judging those triple toe loops and salchows with reckless abandon! Dressed in your finest sparkly blazer and pink lipstick so you match the un-matchable Johnny Weir! Frantically Googling the rules to Nordic Combined so you can accurately (and critically) judge from afar? You know what else helps? Champagne!
This drink is part celebration, part bar (pantry?) dive, part party. I have done hours (minutes) of research on every athlete, and am prepared to cheer on Team USA in the finest sporting events the world can offer. Obviously my favorite athletes are all of those chosen by the fine folks at NBC to do human interest stories on. Oh, your beloved yellow lab who has been with you through thick and thin ALSO snowboards? Someone get me to the fan club. Oh, you’ve overcome immense personal struggle, injury and recovery but now find yourself stepping onto Olympic ice for the first time with the olympic rings tattooed on your bicep forever and ever? I’M ALL IN. Get me my (P&G) tissues. Clear eyes full hearts CANT LOSE!
All of these couch-endorphins have inspired me to create a champagne cocktail. I’m more than willing to sit on the couch sipping bubbles while the snowboarders slam Dew and Powerade. Raising my glass in solidarity and in celebration when they crush their PR.
And don’t be fooled by its demure exterior, this cocktail packs a punch. Grand Marnier is mixed with champagne and a few drops of orange blossom water to create an orangey, punchy, bubbly celebration cocktail perfect for the winter games. “Fire” garnish is optional, but encouraged!
The Olympic Torch
1.5 oz Grand Marnier
4-6 drops orange flower water
Champagne or any dry sparkling wine
In champagne flute, add Grand Marnier and top with champagne. Add 4-6 drops of orange blossom water and garnish with orange peel “flame.” Cheers!
