Need a way to cap off your Friday? Craving some sort of boozy adult snow cone? Have I got the drink for you: Sour. Cherry. Vodka. Smash.
During what can only be described as a THRILLING sour-cherry week here at The Proper Binge, it is of course fitting to put together a cocktail featuring our favorite little stone fruit. This one took little thought, as anything tart (limes, lemons, etc.) goes with vodka, and I wanted to highlight the fruit as much as possible.
A “smash” cocktail traditionally uses a spirit, a sweetener, and an herb. In place of the herb here I’ve swapped a quarter of a lime and of course, cherries. Cherry Pit simple syrup is an obvious byproduct of pitting millions of cherries and could not be easier. Did you know a ton of flavor, including a little bit of almond (there’s a reason almond extract is always in cherry pie) flavor is found deep inside the pit of many stone fruits? Read about it here! Impress your friends with your wild food knowledge!
So this Friday, as we end this exciting week celebrating the cherries that I’ll have in my freezer for the next year minimum, crush some ice, smash some fruit, and have a drink. Happy weekend friends!
Sour Cherry Vodka Smash
Makes 1 cocktail, multiply as needed
Crushed ice (use your blender!)
1.5 oz vodka
1 oz Cherry Pit Simple Syrup (recipe below)
14 or so sour cherries, stemmed and pitted (keep the pits!), plus some whole for garnish
quarter of a lime
For the cherry pit simple syrup, combine 1 Cup of cherry pits with 2 cups of sugar, and 2 cups of water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a strong simmer, stirring until sugar is fully dissolved. Remove from heat and let steep for 15 minutes. Strain pits and pour liquid into storage container. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
For the cocktail, add pitted cherries, syrup and quarter of a lime to bottom of cocktail shaker and muddle to release lime oils and cherry juice. Add vodka and shake it like you mean it.
Meanwhile, fill a rocks glass halfway with crushed ice. Strain cocktail into ice. Pile more shaved/crushed ice on top and finish with a fresh cherry! Cheers!
