Driveway Drinks go Camping! Somehow we are already halfway through July, if that’s even possible? Only a few weeks left of my kids precious summer before they are once again whisked away on a giant yellow bus to school ALL DAY LONG! This weekend we are headed to Michigan to camp on the beach and soak up some of that sweet Third Coast.
Every summer for the past 3 or so years we have gone up with my cousin and her family and camped in Warren Dunes State Park, just over the Indiana border into Michigan. I had never seen this beach until I was an adult and it blew me away the first time my toes hit the sand. The dunes and the sand and the water is unlike any beach on any lake you’ve ever seen. I love the idea of going back to the same place year after year, just for a long weekend, to cement some memories in the kid’s heads and spend some time in the great outdoors.
This year I naturally decided to bring Driveway Drinks to our campsites. The requirements were obviously centered around simplicity. Can’t be hauling egg whites and cocktail shakers to the campsite (although I’m not against it!). This cocktail is as easy as it gets. I’m not a HUGE vodka fan, so in place of it I opted for some local Hotel Tango 100% Indiana Sweet Corn good old fashioned Moonshine to kick up this cocktail a bit. Fever Tree Ginger Beer packs a solid spicy ginger punch that holds its own against the white whiskey, and a squeeze of lime tops it off. The traditional copper mugs didn’t make the cut for camping supplies, but I’m pretty sure a tin mug is just as good. Probably better.
Hoosier Moonshine Mule
Makes 1 cocktail
2 ounces Moonshine
½ ounce fresh lime juice
3 ounces ginger beer, preferably Fever Tree
Fill tin mug (or copper, or just a solo cup. Basically whatever you want to drink out of) with clear ice. Add moonshine, lime juice and ginger beer and stir. Enjoy next to a fire with friends!
